About

Gateshead Storm were formed in September 2002, many of the original squad having played together as part of the Gateshead Thunder Academy. To help prepare for the Rugby League Conference, the club agreed to help Durham Tigers in the 2002 competition.

Storm entered the North East Division of the Rugby League Conference in 2003, progressed to the play-offs and were named ‘Club of the Year 2003’.

In 2004 they narrowly lost to London Scholars in the RLC challenge cup and stepped up to National League Three at short notice to take the place of Teesside Steelers.

2008 saw Storm relocate to a new home at Bullocksteads Sports Ground in Newcastle. Along with the relocation, there was a change of personnel within the club with Rob Jones stepping down as Head Coach to take up a role as Chairman and being replaced by John Coutts.

In 2009 Storm took the difficult decision to withdraw from NL3 and resume competing in the North East League in 2010 which saw them merge with Newcastle Knights to become Newcastle Storm, before reverting back to Gateshead Storm in 2011.

2012 saw Strom reach the North East Grand Final and face off against rivals Jarrow Vikings coming away with a 20-22 win and progressing to the National knockout competition. Storm travelled to Edinburgh Eagles in the first round which turned out to be a step too far Storm going down 36-20 to the Scottish champions.

Storm won the North East league again in 2013 as well as the North East Cup and in 2014 reached the North East Grand Final again but this time losing out to Jarrow Vikings in a 29 – 28 thriller. 2014 also saw Storm win the pre-season Selby Cup.

In 2015 Storm took a step up and entered the National Conference league and finished 8th in their debut season with some good wins along the way.

Storm competed in the National Conference League until 2021 when COVID 19 affected player availability and unfortunately took the decision not to re-enter in in 2022.

Additional notes:

Gateshead Storm Juniors were formed in August 2008 by Storm stalwart Gavin Houston on the back of the success of Joseph Swan School’s under-12 team.
This team carried on to u16s.

A second junior side joined them in 2012 lead by Storm head coach Chris Parker.

Storm started their mini section in which was attended by just 2 players. This grew over the season and the club finished the year with over 20 players at 2 age groups.
The junior section has grown year on year and the club now runs teams at every age group from u8s to u16s competing in the North East League, has 2 sides competing in the Yorkshire Junior League and are regular attendees of the Rhino’s Challenge Festival in Butlins Skegness
